The Defence Ministry says at least 5,000 rebels have been killed this year in clashes with government troops.

The ministry has reported the loss of 447 of its own soldiers in the same period.

Sri Lankan troops have been stepping-up their efforts to rebel strongholds in the north of the country.

Eight rebel boats, carrying at least 16 guerrillas were fired upon on Sunday in an attack off the north-western coast.

Elsewhere in the north, ground troops killed 18 rebels and lost one soldier during fighting on Saturday.

This terrorist outlaws should be eliminated from the Sri Lankan soil. For nearly three decades they have been killing innocent civilians in the name of their bloody dream, a seperate state within Sri Lanka. Actually they are not rebels or freedom fighters, only terrorists.

I salute our brave forces and this time we have a President whom these terrorists can not play with.

Well I reckon the govt is just wasting its time, seriously these Tamils won’t give up easily. The govt should be a bit more smart and find another way (not fighting) to resolve this conflict...and no i am not a supporter of the Tamil Tigers!!!
