BUENOS AIRES, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Rony Barbosa and Gustavo Scarpa scored either side of halftime as Palmeiras secured a 2-1 away win over Defensa y Justicia in the first leg of the Recopa Sudamericana on Wednesday.
Rony gave the Brazilian side an early lead by dinking a shot over goalkeeper Ezequiel Unsain after Willian Siqueira's through pass.
Walter Romero equalized for the Argentine outfit just before the hour mark after combining with Walter Bou and sliding a first-time shot into the bottom right corner.
Scarpa struck the winner in the 75th minute with a curling 30-yard free kick that left Unsain with not chance.
The return leg will be played in Brazilian capital Brasilia next Wednesday (April 14).
The Recopa Sudamericana is South America's version of the UEFA Super Cup. Palmeiras qualified as champions of the Copa Libertadores - the region's premier club competition - while Defensa y Justicia won the 2020 Copa Sudamericana - the equivalent of the Europa League.
