BUENOS AIRES, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Diego Dabove has quit as manager of San Lorenzo after the club's elimination from Argentina's Primera Division on Sunday.
"I've decided to step down because it's the best thing to do for the club," the 48-year-old told reporters.
The announcement followed San Lorenzo's 2-0 defeat at Racing Club on Sunday's final day of the regular season, a result that left them fifth in Group A, just outside the quarterfinal places.
"We were very close but we weren't good enough and know we have to face reality," Dabove said. "Tomorrow I am going to say goodbye to the squad. I apologize to everyone. We have worked hard and tried to do our best but it didn't work out.:
Dabove led the 2014 Copa Libertadores champions to eight wins, five draws and eight losses after taking charge in January.
