Top seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus survived a day of upsets and cruised into the quarterfinals of the Viking International Eastbourne on Wednesday, turning back American Alison Riske 6-1, 6-4.
Sabalenka, the only remaining seeded player in the tournament, will meet Italian Camila Giorgi, who defeated American Shelby Rogers 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
The Nos. 2, 3 and 4 seeds -- Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, Bianca Andreescu of Canada and Iga Swiatek of Poland, respectively -- were beaten, as was sixth-seeded Belinda Bencic, who lost to fellow Swiss player Viktorija Golubic 6-4, 6-4.
American Coco Gauff, who stopped No. 7 seed Elise Mertens of Belgium on Tuesday, was eliminated by Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Bad Homburg Open
No. 1 seed Petra Kvitkova of the Czech Republic turned back American Ann Li 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-1 as all four seeded players in action advanced to the quarterfinals at Bad Homburg, Germany.
Kvitkova served four aces and saved all six potential break points while converting four of her nine break-point opportunities.
Second seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus topped France's Alize Cornet 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7), No. 4 seed Angelique Kerber of Germany beat Russian Anna Blinkova 6-0, 6-2 and fifth-seeded Argentinian Nadia Podoroska took three sets to topple Romania's Patricia Maria Tig 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-4.
