BUENOS AIRES, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Boca Juniors have suspended Peruvian defender Carlos Zambrano and striker Dario Benedetto for two matches after the teammates reportedly came to blows at halftime of a league match against Racing Club.
Zambrano and Benedetto exchanged heated words before punching each other while in the tunnel connecting the pitch to the dressing rooms at Racing's El Cilindro stadium in Buenos Aires on Sunday.
"Club Atletico Boca Juniors, after the events that occurred last Sunday, informs that Dario Benedetto and Carlos Zambrano will not be part of the first team squad in the next two games."
Boca, 12th in Argentina's 28-team Primera Division standings, will play Rosario Central at home and Defensa y Justicia away in their next two matches.
Club vice-president Juan Roman Riquelme earlier publicly reprimanded Zambrano and Benedetto by telling a media outlet that their "boxing" had "disrespected the shirt and the fans".
