Emerging Technologies: Internet of Things(IoT)

10 Feb 2023, 03:19 GMT+10

What is the Internet of Things devices?
Everyone is familiar with the internet. A vast global network of computers, servers, and databases enables instantaneous data transport. The internet has fundamentally altered how people work, study, and interact. What is the Internet of Things, though? The Internet of Things, or IoT for short, is a network analogous to the internet. In contrast to the internet, IoT refers to the interconnection of physical items, machinery, and appliances with software and sensors that enable them to communicate via the internet.

This includes smart home equipment and virtual assistants such as Amazon's Alexa. You may command Alexa to adjust the temperature or dim the lights, and she will comply. This is because these systems are linked via the cloud. They can detect, interpret, and share data. Alexa, Siri, Cortana, and Google Assistant are Artificial Intelligence (AI) examples, and it may not be long before every home has a robot butler. There are more than 10 billion IoT devices worldwide as of 2022, and analysts estimate that another 12 billion will be added in the next three years.

Importance of IoT

The Internet of Things has multiple applications in various fields. As discussed previously, individuals and families can utilize technology to manage their homes and complete jobs better. There are also further uses. For instance, IoT can monitor youngsters, the elderly, and pets. Baby monitors can be linked to an app that notifies parents when their child is crying. Chips and sensors embedded in wristbands and collars can also be used to monitor the location of elderly people and animals. In addition to informing carers of their patients' heartbeats and vitals, these sensors could also alert them in an emergency.

This technology also benefits organizations and corporations in virtually every area. IoT can monitor and track production and the supply chain and provide intelligent solutions to problems. For example, businesses may equip their trucks with sensors and GPS trackers to monitor their location in real-time. They could also utilize autonomous cars and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to expedite deliveries. In forthcoming blogs, we will elaborate on self-driving automobiles and unmanned aerial aircraft. This information on the supply chain assists managers in making better strategies.

In addition, businesses and industries might utilize technology to track the depreciation of their capital assets and machines. Farmers might utilize IoT to check irrigation levels, while towns could use it to regulate traffic, scan air quality, and assess energy usage in real-time.

Pros versus Cons

We have already addressed a number of the Internet of Things advantages. It is beneficial for both households and businesses and provides a variety of answers to challenges. IoT technology is effective, saves time, and reduces the need for human labor. Moreover, consumers can operate gadgets and monitor their data in real time from anywhere in the world. This is especially significant for businesses where quick choices are required. More information regarding resource use, machine functionality, and supply chain movement is also advantageous for managers and those in charge. In the healthcare industry, patient health information can represent the difference between life and death. Cities and governments can also use the Internet of Things technology to develop smart cities and plan municipalities.

However, there are other downsides associated with IoT. There are, first and foremost, security and privacy concerns. All IoT devices are interconnected, so if a hacker gains access to one, they can access all of them. Similarly, a single system component flaw will damage the entire system. People are also concerned that technologies like Alexa are eavesdropping their private discussions. Amazon could sell the user information it collects to the government or private groups.

Additionally, IoT technology may replace human labor, leading to unemployment. In addition, the technology can be costly and difficult to operate, requiring firms to maintain many employees to implement it. However, the price of the technology will likely decrease as it gains popularity. People may get complacent if they are overly reliant on intelligent technology.
