BUENOS AIRES, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Matias Abaldo and Gabriel Avalos scored second-half goals as Independiente continued its impressive start to the season with a 2-0 home win over Lanus in Argentina's Apertura tournament on Friday.

After a staid first half, Abaldo and Avalos struck in the space of six minutes early in the second as Independiente eased to its second win of the campaign.

"We were very solid defensively against a team that attacks at high speed," Independiente manager Gustavo Quinteros told a post-match news conference.

"Today the opposition was unable to have clear scoring chances and that means that our defense was very solid."

The Avellaneda club is now second in Group A with nine points from five games, two points behind leader Velez Sarsfield. Lanus is fifth in the 15-team group with eight points.

In other fixtures on Friday, Defensa y Justicia was held to a 1-1 home draw by Velez Sarsfield and San Lorenzo drew 0-0 at Union Santa Fe.
