Argentine president appoints new justice minister

BUENOS AIRES, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Argentine President Javier Milei announced Wednesday that Juan Bautista Mahiques will replace Mariano Cuneo Libarona as the country's minister of justice.

"The new Minister of Justice is Dr. Juan Bautista Mahiques, who will continue working to make Argentina great again," Milei said on X.

Mahiques, 45, a lawyer who has served as the attorney general of Buenos Aires city since 2019, pledged in a post on X to uphold the rule of law and strengthen public trust in the judicial system.

"Without legal certainty there is no investment, without stable rules there is no development," Mahiques said, stressing that Argentina requires an independent, impartial and modern justice system that protects victims and that reaffirms "the law is enforced equally for everyone."
